I do find there are some areas in which ESO has stumbled. Premium & Professional customer supportĪs I see it, they have somewhat delivered and justified their choice in being a subscription model.Freedom to play - alone or with your friends. “The Elder Scrolls Online was designed and developed to be a premium experience: hundreds of hours of gameplay, tons of depth and features, professional customer support” A game with meaningful and consistent content - one packed with hundreds of hours of gameplay that can be experienced right away and one that will be supported with premium customer support.” “We're building a game with the freedom to play - alone or with your friends - as much as you want. I pulled the following quotes from this interview: ZOS has always maintained that ESO being a subscription model enables the game to be developed in a way that benefits the game overall. I prefer to pay my $15 a month and know that I can just play to my heart’s content and not have to worry about having to shell out some cash to go do activity A, B or C. I hate the idea of pay-gates and the seemingly sneaky tactics of many of the FTP systems that are currently out there. Let me start off that I am NOT suggesting ESO be free to play (FTP). I don't think TESO should be subscription - you've got a beautiful thing going on here. I've blogged about my view that TESO should be F2P, but after playing it in its current state I can say I was wrong. Updates to ArcheAge are based on grabbing as much money as they can. Updates to TESO are based on improving the game for its players which encourages new subs, and encourages existing subs to stay subbing. You will drown in a quagmire of rage, tears, and epic-ignorance from Trion. I dare you all to go to the ArcheAge forums. And whilst people do have gripes, it's met positively by Zenimax. On the forums people actually discuss and debate like grown ups. In-game I've had random strangers come to help me, and give me advice. But the biggest difference between TESO and other F2P games I play is the community - so far I've seen very little toxicity. The client is stable, the content is fun, and the developer is constantly trying to improve the game for everyone. TESO is such a beautifully polished game. But it took me to the actual credits of the game.Īnd then it hit me - I've been suckered in by poorly implemented F2P cash grab games that when I come to a legitimate and properly managed game I feel disorientated. On the login screen I saw a link to 'credits', and clicked it expecting to see a page allowing me to buy gems or something. I asked in /zone and I Googled - I was confused. When I first loaded up TESO I was looking for its cash store. People spent hundreds of dollars trying to get it, then posting on the forums raging when they didn't. And, wait for it, you couldn't even just buy the item, you had to buy an RNG box which gave you a 0.001% (estimated) chance at getting it. The recent 'Hallowtide' event introduced a Halloween themed costume, but this was sold on the cash shop. But after playing the game and seeing how much effort Zenimax has put into improving it since release, I have to say for TESO subscription is the right model.Įverything in ArcheAge seems to revolve around the cash shop. I often said I wouldn't play TESO until it became F2P - I'm a big believer in the F2P model, and think it's the future of MMOs. With the upcoming 1.5 update I decided to take a look again, and I'm glad I did. I played during Beta, and was disappointed with the product so didn't buy it. Its all a matter of opinion, but for me more than likely, if this game (or any mmo) goes free to play I will not be playing for long. Eve Online, and recently The Elderscrolls Online. These are the games that I feel are worth it, fun and hold my interest that I have come back to. These are the games that I purchased and lost interest due to the fact that I can take my character and click on a mob and close my eyes and win almost every time. Fallen Earth, StarWars, DC Universe Online, The Secret World. And the only reason I ever log in is that they are free and something new seems to be happening (like a seasonal holiday occurrence), but I have never really played more than a week or two a year since they have gone free to play. These are the games that I purchased but since they went free to play I lost interest and don't really play. Fallen Earth, StarWars The old Republic, DC Universe Online PS3, World of Warcraft, The Secret World, Eve Online, and recently The ElderScrolls Online. These are the MMO games that I have purchased in no particular order.
